A.3 | EP.9 | Set without Subject

(Narrative Arc | Logline)

Absurdist comedy / Substitution | When the subject of an elaborate photographic shoot fails to appear, a crew begins photographing abstract paintings and studio objects, only to discover that the empty set has developed a personality of its own.
(ACt 1)

Sol prepares an elaborate set for a portrait session. King checks the camera and lighting while Elia stands in for the expected subject. Everything is ready. Elia steps off her mark. They wait.
(Plot Point 1)
Elia places an abstract painting where she had been standing. King adjusts the light to accommodate its proportions. Sol takes a photograph. The session proceeds.
(Act 2)
Paintings, drawings, and fragments assume increasingly elaborate roles. Sol directs their placement with growing precision. Elia demonstrates a gesture, then searches for an object that can hold it. King adjusts the camera and offers practical solutions to the performers’ limited range. A painting refuses to stand. A reflection steals the scene.
(Plot Point 2)
While rearranging the objects, the three step back to assess the setup. Sol notices the image on the monitor. The spaces between things, the unused chair, and the edge of a light stand have become more compelling than the portrait they were trying to make.
(Act 3)
King widens the frame. Elia removes the mark from the floor. Sol keeps the camera running as they withdraw behind it. The entire constructed environment becomes a portrait in which every object performs and nobody is present.
